Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie first met at Bayport-Blue Point High School in Bayport, New York. They became friends, then started dating in 2019 after graduating in 2017. Eventually, Petito moved to North Point, Florida, to live with Laundrie’s family, but it was a difficult transition. According to her friend Rose Davis, featured in the Netflix series, Petito struggled to get along with Laundrie’s mother, Roberta, and faced increasingly controlling behavior from Laundrie himself.
One disturbing incident alleged in the documentary involved Laundrie stealing Petito’s wallet and ID to prevent her from going out with Davis. Despite these troubling signs, the couple bonded over their shared love for travel, national parks, and road trips. In July 2020, they became engaged and set their sights on a grand adventure.
To fund their trip, Petito worked various jobs, including positions as a pharmacy technician and at Taco Bell. She eventually bought a 2012 Ford Transit Connect, which they remodeled to make livable for their four-month journey. On July 2, 2021, exactly a year after their engagement, the couple set off from New York.
Petito documented their travels on social media, particularly on YouTube under the account Nomadic Statik and her Instagram page, which carried the bio: “traveling the world in our tiny van #vanlife.” Unfortunately, the vibrant and adventurous life she portrayed online masked the dark reality behind the scenes.
